  Squamae loosely attached to partly ascending, solitary and scattered to ±imbricate, rounded or lobate, plane to undulate, with deflexed to revolute margins, pale brown to orange-brown, 2–6 mm wide, 0.25–0.35 mm thick. Lower surface usually pale, occasionally brown to blackish, anchored by hyaline rhizohyphae, lacking rhizines. Perithecia to 0.55 mm diam. Exciple hyaline to pale yellowish brown. Periphyses 30–40 µm long. Asci 70–90 × 10–15 µm. Ascospores ellipsoidal, 12–17 × 5.5–7.5 µm. Pycnidia rather sparse, marginal, appearing as hemispherical protrusions to 0.3 mm diam. Conidia oblong-ellipsoidal, 3–4 µm long.
     
  Occurs in W.A., N.T., S.A., Qld, N.S.W. and Vic.; grows on soil or humus, often among bryophytes. Widespread and common in Europe and North America.
