Born West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England, 4 Dec. 1830; d. Lebrena, Hobart, Tas., 10 Sept. 1878.
Son of Joseph. Solicitor, photographer, naturalist, with special interest in fishes. Arrived Hobart, Tas., 11 Dec. 1831, lived there until his death. Explored & collected widely in Tas. incl. lichens at Gordon R. Visited Lake St Clair & Mt Arrowsmith Feb. 1863. Introduced fish & plants to Tas. Member, Roy. Soc. Tas. from 1849, published papers in its journal. His mother, Mary Morton Allport, taught him to paint.
The Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, State Library of Tasmania, Hobart, was bequeathed to people of Tas. by his grandson Henry. FLS.
