Before arriving in Sydney in 1832, Anderson had collected in Sierra Leone, Ascension Island, Brazil and Chile. He was botanical collector on King's voyages (1818-1821), Succeeded Allan Cunningham as New South Wales Colonial Botanist and Superintendent of the Botanic Gardens from 1838. His collections were sent to Kew, with others now in CGE, G, GOET, MO, NSW'and OXF.

With P.P.King on surveys of S. American coast 1826-30. Arr. in Sydney 25 Aug. 1832. Asst. superintendent at Sydney Botanic Gardens Sept. 1835, becoming superintendent Feb. 1838-Apr. 1842. Collected mainly in coastal areas of N.S.W., e.g. Fish R. near Bathurst, esp. for William Hooker & for Low & Mackay of Clapton. May have given specimens to Hiigel q.v. Specimens mainly at BM (numbered to at least 125), OXF, also at BRI, CGE, E?, G, GOET, K, MO, NSW, PERTH (2). Commemorated in Carex.
Often confused with John Anderson who also collected in NSW.
