Born February 1950 in Sydney;
Son of James Michael Armstrong (1917 - 1981), an Australian Olympic sport wrestler and NSW rugby league player.
From 1968-71 was a University Trainee with NSW Dept of Agriculture.
Completed a BSc at Sydney University in 1972.
Employed as a botanist at the National Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney from 1972, where his research interests focused on biosystematics and pollination of Australian plants. During this time he enrolled in a part-time PhD with the School of Botany at UNSW.
In September 1982 he was appointed Curator of the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra, replacing John Wrigley. He later managed the botanical and research units of the Gardens following a staff restructure in the mid-1980s. He left the ANBG in April 1989.
He worked in botanical and conservation positions for the Western Australian government in the 1990s before taking similar positions overseas.
He undertook a major revision of the genus Zieria (Rutaceae) and had a strong interest in pollination biology and conservation.
