Born at Kuldja, Sinkiang province of China on 24th April 1945. Died Brisbane 20 February 2009.
Migrated with his Russian mother and two sisters, arriving in Australia in November 1959. George was naturalised as an Australian subject in 1963. From 1966 to 1974 he was employed by the Agrostology Section of the Department of Primary Industries and worked in Charleville, Ipswich, and the Brigalow Research Station near Theodore.
Because of his interest in ecology, and support from Selwyn
Everist, he joined the staff of the Queensland Herbarium in 1974. George
published many papers dealing mainly with coastal flora and vegetation. He had a fascination of the unique flora of serpentine regions worldwide, and was an expert in the serpentine flora of central
His plant collecting activities include 20,000 collections.
George was a real character, a people person who enjoyed conversation, a clever joke and a good laugh.
