Naval navigator, commander. Took voyages to Indian Ocean in 1792 & West Indies in 1796. Commander of expedition to New Holland with Géographe (q.v) & Naturaliste (under Hamelin), which left Le Havre 18 Oct. 1800, and returned 25 March 1804.
Baudin collected specimens, e.g. at King George Sound. His main collection at P. Some specimens collected by others also attributed to him, e.g. at BM, E, G, K, NSW (1), PERTH, PH.
Account of voyage written by Peron & Freycinet (pub. 1807,1812, 1816).
Commemorated in Cissus, Eucalyptus, Limonium, Calyptorhynchus (black cockatoo), Baudin Is.
