Born in Sydney, NSW, 3 June 1949.
His honours degree is from the University of New South Wales, gained as a NSW Dept of Agriculture trainee. He took up duties as a Plant Ecologist at the National Herbarium of New South Wales, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney in 1972 and has worked on vegetation mapping in New South Wales and projects in conservation science.
When publishing Eucalyptus bensonii L. Johnson & K. Hill (1990) the authors wrote:
'The specific epithet honours Douglas Howard Benson, Ecologist with the National Herbarium of New South Wales, who drew attention to this taxon during a vegetation mapping program in the area in which it occurs'.
