To N.Z. 1850. Arrived Sydney, NSW, 1852; moved to Qld 1860.
Parliamentary officer (Clerk, Legislative Assembly, Brisbane, for 47 years), company director, horticulturist. Member, Qld Acclimatisation Soc. from 1862. Wrote several papers on economic botany, e.g. olives.
Collected plants for F.M.Bailey: on Peel Is., Moreton Bay 1875, Thursday Is. July 1885; also fungi.

Commemorated in Microstylis, Nepenthes, Phaius, Uncaria.
