Lauren Black began practising botanical art in 1997 at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. She settled in Tasmania in 1999, and her passion for the Tasmanian wilderness and and the states native flora has culminated in many projects and commissions, working jointly with botanists, artists, community and government organisations, and private clients. Her desire to see botanical art, both historic and contemporary, recognised in Tasmania has been a driving force behind her work.
In 2003 she curated ‘Nature of Islands - worldwide contemporary botanical art’ at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Launceston. This exhibition represented the first international contemporary botanical art exhibition to be shown in Tasmania.
In 2004 she won the Margaret Flockton Award for excellence in Scientific Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney.
In 2005 she was awarded an Asialink Visual Arts Residency, giving her the opportunity to develop her art practice in Sri Lanka.
