A nephew of William Macarthur, Bowman collected widely in central-eastern Queensland in the 1860s and 1870s, sending his specimens to F.Mueller. Many of his collecting localities are obscure or ambiguous; many were resolved by Blake (1954). Bowman's collections are now in MEL.

Rockingham Bay 1866, Fitzroy R.1866, Rockhampton (Neerkool Ck) 1867, Kings Ck 1869, 1870, Mackenzie R.1871, Herbert Ck, Burdekin R. (maps in Blake, 1955, pp 7, 15); also Cape R.,1875. [sic; Bowman died in 1872 and the majority of his Cape River collections listed in Australia's Virtual Herbarium are undated.]

Commemorated in Agaricus, Boroma, Cyperus, Dendrobium, Eremophlla, Eucalyptus, Pimelea, Ricinocarpos.
