Boyle was born in Scotland on 4 March 1821 and died at Melbourne, in 1900.
Collector of the lectotype of E. regnans F. Muell. (1888)
When J. H. Willis (q.v.) (1967) selected a lectotype for E. regnans F. Muell. he noted that ‘the collector’s name is not given, but was probably David Boyle of Nunawading’. Nunawading is now a suburb of Melbourne, Vic. It is not known when he migrated to Australia but he was a casual collector of botanical specimens for F. Mueller from the 1860s. He conducted an extensive nursery at Forest Hill, Nunawading, and was a competent and prolific sketcher of fruit, exotic flowers and did some very fine coloured illustrations of ferns of the Dandenongs. Most of the drawings were not published but many of the originals are now privately held in Victoria.
