After emigrating to Australia he became Resident Magistrate at Geraldton, Western Australia. He accompanied F.T.Gregory's expedition to north-western Australia in 1861, sending botanical collections to F.Mueller. These are now in MEL.

On F.T.Gregory's expedition to Nickol Bay area, WA, 1861, collecting plants in the Gascoyne, sent to Mueller; Shark Bay 1863. At Roebuck Bay 1865; resident magistrate Greenough 1866-69; Government Resident Geraldton 1869-70, 1886-1904; collected there 1897.
Owned Newmarracarra Station near Geraldton. MLC 1870-72, 1874-86.
Specimens at E (ex A.Morrison's herbarium), MEL, PERTH (3).
Commemorated in Acacia, Eremophila, Gomphrena, Scaevola, Sida, also Maitland River.
Monument at Fremantle.
