DEATH NOTICE J. L. BRUCE. (Sydney Morning Herald 30 November 1921, p.16 via Trove)
The death occurred on Monday of Mr. John Leek Bruce, a prominent figure in the field of sanitary-science. The late Mr. Bruce was born in Glasgow on October 16, 1850, and followed the profession of architect in that cily, as a member of the firm of Bruce and Sturrock. Being ordered to Australia for health reasons, Mr. Bruce and family arrived in Sydney in May 1887, and for a period he practised as a consulting engineer and archi tect, and was editor of the "Building and Engineering Journal." He was appointed to the Government architect's oflice in 1889, and in 1891 he was placed in charge of the sannitary science department of the Sydney Technical College, then more or less in its infancy in Sussex Street. Mr. Bruce held that position for 29 years, and on his retiral was made a Fellow of tbe Technical College. He was a membor of tho Royal Society, the Royal Sanitary Institute, and of the New South Wales examiners for the latter body, and president of the New South Wales sani- tary examining board. He was a member of the Sydney Highland Society. Tho late Mr. Bruce is survived by a widow, two sons, and two married daughters.
