Born in Taree, New South Wales, 29 October 1956;
He spent his first ten years in
the small NSW country town of Taree, and moved to Sydney with his family in the late 60s.
Despite a childhood interest in both plants and animals, his choice to study botany was influenced by being allergic to horses, cows, and chickens.
Jeremy gained a Diploma of Horticulture at Burnley Horticultural College,
Melbourne in 1976, then a BSc (Hons) from the University of NSW in 1984.

His PhD was from the Australian National University
(1991), for taxonomic studies of the sedge genera of the world, applying DELTA
to Cyperaceae, and examining variation in photosynthetic pathways in the
family.
He then undertook a post-doctoral fellow at the Missouri Botanical
Garden (MO) working on the Flora of North America project (1989-1990) and he
returned to Canberra, to take up an ABRS grant on Phyllantheae for the Flora of
Australia based at the Australian National Herbarium and the Australian National
University.
In 1992 he was appointed as lecturer in the Department of Botany at
the University of New England (UNE) where his research interests in Cyperaceae and
Phyllantheae continued but diversified through many student projects. He was
also made first Director of the N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium in 1993.
With his partner, Dr Frances Quinn and their two sons, he flew to the UK to commence his one-year term as ABLO at Kew on 1 August 2007.
After his ABLO term, he returned to the the Department of Botany at
the UNE on 1 September 2008.
He was promoted to full Professor in January 2012.
By 2023 he had written over 250
publications, supervised to completion 26 Honours and minor postgraduate
research students (five gaining a University Medal), three MSc students, 15 PhD
students and in 2023 had six research students.
He retired on 11 February 2021
and retained the position of Director, N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium, till his successor, Andrew Thornhill,
was appointed to a combined position of Lecturer in Plants Systematics, UNE, and
Director, N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium in March 2023.
Bruhl was awarded Emeritus
Professor commencing 12 Feb 2023.
