Surgeon on the voyage of the Beagle (1837-1843). Collected at Depuch Island and the Abrolhos, (and perhaps on Dampier Peninsula) in Western Australia, Victoria River in the Northern Territory, in Bass Strait, and in New South Wales. The specimens are at BM and in W.J.Hooker's herbarium at K.

Naval surgeon. On HMS Beagle 1825-43 incl. voyage under FitzRoy with Charles Darwin 1831-36, with Wickham & Stokes 1837-43.
On NW coast from Roebuck Bay to Port George Fourth, early 1838; Bass Str. islands, Port Phillip and Tas., July 1838 - May 1839, then to Sydney; on Qld coast June-July, then to Port Essington (late Aug.), then Arnhem Land, to Swan R. (Arrived 31 Jan. 1840, departed 4 Apr.); NW coast to Timor & return to Swan R. (27 Sept. - 25 Oct.); King George Sound (2-15 Nov.), Holdfast Bay (29 Nov.); Sydney, Arrived 23 Dec. 1840.
Further survey of Qld coast & Gulf of Carpentaria June-Sept. 1841; visited Timor and again sailed down W coast to Swan R. (arr. 23 Nov. 1841); visited Champion Bay 14-17 Dec. including excursion to Wizard Peak 15-16 Dec, then to Koombana Bay (27-29 Dec. 1841), King George Sound (Jan. 1842), Adelaide (26 Jan.-7 Feb. 1842), Portland Bay (Feb.), Hobart (26 Feb.) and Sydney (Arrived 15 Mar.). Collected many plants, esp. on Depuch Is., Abrolhos Is., WA, Victoria R., NT, Bass Strait. Also in NSW, e.g. Mt Tomah.
From 1843 to 1846 on HMS Fly. Also on Aboukir transporting convicts to Tasmania, 1851-52. Returned Jan. 1863.
Specimens mainly at BM, K, also at MEL, NA, NSW (3), PERTH, TCD.
Also collected fauna (specimens at BM).
Commemorated in Acacia, Plectrachne, Thespesia, Bynoe Bay, Bynoe River.
