Cambage, Richard Hind   (1859 - 1928)

Trained as a surveyor, and worked for the Departments of Lands and Mines. Keenly interested in botany, he collaborated with Baker, Maiden, Woolls, and others in studies of Acacia and Eucalyptus. He travelled widely throughout New South Wales as a field surveyor, collecting extensively. His collections are in SYD, with duplicates elsewhere, including A, CANB, DBN, L, NSW and S.

Surveyor with State Dept of Mines 1885, becoming Chief Mining Surveyor 1902, Under-Secretary of Mines 1916, retiring 7 Nov. 1924; lecturer at Sydney Technical College 1909-1915. Involved with many societies; FLS 1904; president, Roy. Soc. NSW, 1912, 1923, and of Linn. Soc. NSW 1926-28; CBE 1925.

Collaborated with J .H. Maiden, H.Deane, R.T.Baker and E.Cheel; also collected for W.Woolls in 1880s. Made major contributions in Acacia, Eucalyptus.

Commemorated in Acacia, Eucalyptus.
