A researcher in island biology and plant anatomy; collected plants in Australia in 1960s and 1970s. Described more than 40 new Australian taxa in the family Stylidiaceae and circumscribed Alexgeorgea, a Western Australian genus in the Restionaceae named in honour of Alex George.
Sherwin Carlquist is commemorated in the name of an Australian triggerplant, Stylidium carlquistii Lowrie.
