Coleman, Carolyn   (fl. 1980s-2000s)

Carolyn is a linguist and teacher.

She worked as regional linguist for 12 years with the NT Department of Education.

She has taught English and English as a Second Language in mainstream secondary schools.

In remote NT schools she has taught first-language literacy to First Nations adults and helped to develop curriculum and learning resources for indigenous language and two-way learning programs.

For three years she worked as teacher-linguist in the language program at Maningrida College.

Since joining the Team at the Bininj Kunwok Regional Language and Culture Centre she has worked on resource production and translation projects, and as a language consultant with academic research teams, also with central and West Arnhem community organisations.

Carolyn was part of an indigenous team working on a plant book:

"We continue our work on a new book about plants! The book will feature around 100 plants that are named in central and western Arnhem Land languages, together with information about plant use.

It will contain the names of plants in nine languages: Mawng, Kunbarlang, Ndjebbana, Na-kara, Gurr-goni, Burarra and Gun-nartpa, Rembarrnga, Dalabon and Bininj Kunwok. Gary Fox has been busy taking photographs of the plants; Margaret Carew and Carolyn Coleman have been busy checking their names."
