Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
John worked as an herbarium assistant to Bernie Hyland at the CSIRO Herbarium in Atherton, Queensland during the 1980s and early 1990s.
He moved to Canberra in 1993 and joined the Eucalypt Research Group at the Australian National Herbarium (ANH), mostly working with Ian Brooker and Andrew Slee on the development of the interactive key to Australian eucalypts, EUCLID, including extensive fieldwork across Australia.
John also contributed to the curation and management of the Type Collection and pteridophyte collections at the ANH, including collation of data for a draft interactive key to Australian ferns.
In his last year before retirement (2008) he was involved with a project to study the genetics of the introduced weed Lantana camara in Australia.
He collected about 200 specimens while at Atherton, but the bulk of his collecting concentrates on eucalypts, as part of fieldwork for EUCLID, from February 1993 to June 2004.
He was responsible for much of the photography in the EUCLID key.
