A gardener for the Earl of Aberdeen and later at Kew, Dallachy went
to Ceylon as a plantation manager in 1847.
Appointed Superintendent of
the Melbourne Botanic Garden, Victoria, 1849-1857. Thereafter an assiduous
collector for Mueller, from 1857-1862 in Victoria, and from 1862-1871
in northern Queensland, particularly in the Rockingham Bay region.
Some
ambiguities in his citation of locality names were resolved by Blake
(1954).
His collections are now in MEL, with duplicates at B, BM, KIEL
and W.
