Worked as a specialist on Orchids, Madagascar and Vegetation Mapping as a conservation tool, and teaching on the Horticulture diploma course.
Author of 'The genus Cymbidium' (Orchidaceae), the definitive guide to the wild species of this highly commercial orchid genus. Author of three further books, including the families Orchidaceae and Leguminosae in Madagascar.
He contributed to the Flora of Australia special volume (Vol.50, 1993) devoted to Oceanic Islands, most significantly Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean.
In later life he devoted himself to his other interest as a self-employed Antique Trader, Garden Designer, Plantsman and Botanist, with a demonstrated history of working in retail, design, horticulture and plant science/conservation.
Since 2021 he is co-owner at Bowerbird Antiques, Art and Vintage, Edinburgh.
