Born in Sydney NSW, 14 May 1959.
His
tertiary qualification was obtained at the NSW Institute of Technology.
He is qualified in the Japanese language, passing the Japanese
Proficiency exam, level 3 in December 1989, level 2 in December 1990
and is sitting for level 1 in December 1991.
In 1983 commenced
work at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, as a temporary Technical
Assistant and the next year his appointment was made permanent. He was
then concerned with the loans of herbarium specimens to botanical
specialists at other organisations.
In September 1988
he went to Japan on leave without pay but in July of 1989 he resigned
from the Botanic Gardens. It is understood, but not
explicitly stated in the form which he completed in July 1991, that he
is involved in teaching English in Japan.
