Dunn was born on 16 April 1860, presumably in Australia, and joined the forest service of New South Wales on I July 1902, when he was stationed as a Forest Guard at Acacia Creek in the north-east of the State and close to the border with Queensland. Maiden states that ‘he assiduously collected the forest flora of his district’. In I914 Dunn was transferred to Bermagui and later (1918) to Mittagong. He retired early in 1921.
He is honoured in the name: Eucalyptus dunnii Maiden (1905)
