Giles was a resident keeper at the Zoological Gardens, South Perth, W.A., at the time when they were opened to the public in 1898. Later he was referred to as Head Keeper in a period which included 1909-10. His interests included insects and he wrote A Glimpse of Western Australian Entomology (1903).
He was listed as one of the joint collectors of the type of Eucalyptus mundijongensis Maiden (1913)
