Goessling-St Cloud, Stanley F. (fl. 1950s)

The North Queensland Naturalists' Club must have been a busy place in the 1930s, '40s and '50s with members looking for, and finding new orchid species with the encouragement of Dr Flecker and sending them to orchid botanists in the south.

One member, Stan St Cloud, a coppersmith and restorer of antique furniture who moved to Cairns from Sydney, was confident enough to describe five new species in 1955. None of these names has stood the test of time although Eria irukandjiana has only changed genus to Bryobium irukandjianum. Three, Cadetia ruppii, Cymbidium leroyi and Dendrobium baseyanum have been reduced to synonymy and one, Dendrobium foederatum is now considered be a natural hybrid between D. rigidum and D. teretifolium. Cadetia ruppii, which St Cloud discovered at the Whitfield Range near Cairns, is now known to be Diplocaulobium glabrum.

Other prominent members of the North Queensland Naturalists club included Claude LeRoy and Alick Dockrill.
