Born in Bowral, NSW, 1 March 1953;
Gordon studied at the University of New England, Armidale, obtaining
a PhD in 1980 on the genus Brachychitom.
He was appointed to a position as
botanist at the Queensland Herbarium in 1981, continuing his research in the
family Sterculiaceae.
Gordon was appointed ABLO in Kew, UK, for a one-year term to succeed Clyde Dunlop and arrived in London with his wife Elizabeth on 8 August 1986; he had four days overlap with
Dunlop.
On his return from Kew he continued at the Queensland Herbarium, progressing to become Acting
Director in 1991, the appointment confirmed but retitled as Chief Botanist
in 1994, then retitled again as Director in 2003.
He oversaw the move of the
Herbarium from Indooroopilly to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens site at Mt Coot-tha in 1998.
He retired from the Herbarium in 2022.
His revision of Brachychiton (Sterculiaceae) appeared
in 1988.
