Born Port Lincoln, South Australia on 28 March 1926; died Brisbane, Queensland on 11 July 2014.
Val joined the Chinchilla Field Naturalists Club in 1967 and developed an interest in plants seen on their outings. She began to collect specimens and sent some of these to the Queensland Herbarium for identification. Over time she developed extensive lists of plants growing in the Chinchilla area and published several books.
Acacia handonis was named in her honour.
