Born in England, to John Crisp and his wife Martha (c.1792-1870). Martha's mother was a publican in Perth from c.1836. In 1844, Martha married Franz Anthon Didrich Christian Helmich (1824-1900), Post Master General of WA. They did not have any children.
Martha collected MEL specimens 9 miles from mouth of Swan River, 1882, and at the Swan River, (no date). Her husband also collected MEL specimens.
Martha died in 1904 in Perth aged 82.
