Himson, Arnold (c.1919 - 2006)
Born (? England) in c.1919; died on 1 December 2006 in Tasmania.
Little is known of the life of Arnold Himson.
In a letter to Roger Hnatiuk in January 1987 from 'Sandford' Tasmania, he wrote:
". . . I am an amateur. Apart from a lifelong interest in botany,
I obtained a Kew Certificate (a purely horticultural qualification), the last was under an exserviceman scheme.
. . . the east coast of Tasmania. The reason is simply that I lived there for 25 years."
In the 'Territory of Papua and New Guinea Government Gazette' on Thu 20 Dec 1956,
[Issue No.57] p.603,
PUBLIC SERVICE PROMOTIONS:
There is an appointment:
Himson, Arnold .... Field Assistant (£998), Third Division (Position No. 24), Manager Grade 1 (£903 - £1,083), Second Division (Position No. 145)
"Qualifications - Diploma from a recognized Agricultural College desirable.
Experience in tropical agriculture and handling Native labour desirable."
There is also an image (not digitised), part of
Archives Office of Tasmania, with the caption:
"Arnold Himson, b. ca.1919, crossed Bass Strait in a hot air balloon, with Phil White and Gary Geier, on 30 April 1981. The flight, from Winchelsea to Smithton, lasted approximately 10 hours."
The death of 'Himson, Arnold' is reported in the Hobart Mercury on 4 Dec 2006:
"HIMSON, Arnold, 01 DEC 2006, aged 87".
