Sydney. Governor of New South Wales (1795–1800) and artist. Recorded natural history subjects around the
fledgling Colony, with some possibly being copied from the work of George Raper. His sketchbook is held by the National Library of Australia (NLA) in Canberra, its first page bearing the handwritten title "Birds & Flowers of New South Wales drawn on the spot in 1788, '89 & '90 —". A facsimile edition entitled "The Hunter Sketchbook" was published by the Library in
1989. The original sketchbook has since been partially digitised and images are available for viewing via the NLA's website: http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview/?pi=nla.pic-an3148509
