Born on 19 March 1935 in Bingara NSW (daughter of Allan and Bessie Paterson);
Betsy completed her BSc in 1957, followed by her MSc in 1959, at the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale, New South Wales.
She won a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States and took up a position as a research scholar at the University of Chicago (UC), where she earned her PhD in 1961.
She initially began work as a tutor in botany at UNE in 1957, before taking on the same role at the University of Queensland (UQ) in 1963.
From 1973 through to 2018 she was a lecturer at James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville, Queensland, where she headed the Tropical Plant Sciences Department, and was deputy head of the School of Tropical Biology.
She is the author (or co-author) of many papers, articles, and environmental consultancy reports, and has published a number of books.
She married to E. Machael Jackes (1935-2016) on 22 September 1962, they had 2 children.
