Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born on 8 November 1922 in England; died on 15 January 2009 in Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, SA.
Ida married Garth Paris Jackson (1925-2020, born in Naracoorte, later of Kangaroo Island, SA), and they had 4 children.
Garth was interested in birds, and wrote a small book on KI birds.
lda first met Australian wildflowers at Cummins, a
regional town, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, where she taught in the
Area School in 1949 having come to Australia the previous year. Wildflowers from the bush around Cummins were sent to the University of
Adelaide for identification.
Transferred to Kingscote, Kangaroo Island, the next year,
lda was soon in regular contact with Dr. Eichler, who had become director of the SA
Herbarium in 1955.
Her first plant specimens from Kangaroo Island appear to have been sent to the SA Herbarium for identification in 1962.
She continued collecting specimens for the Herbarium until 2000, focusing on orchids.
She wrote 'Kangaroo Island Orchids' in 1976; followed by
'The Flora of Kangaroo Island - from the sketch books of Ida Jackson' in 1988. This contains her fairly rudimentary line drawings to assist with identification.
In 1990 she was conducting TAFE classes in 'wildflower recognition' on KI.
