Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born on 3 Sep 1929 in Tartu, Estonia; died on 24 Apr 2012 (aged 82) at Mitcham, Sth Aust.
Her parents were Wladimir Jaegermann (1888-1955) and Ilse Jaegermann (1897-?).
After being raised in some comfort in Estonia, Vilja's family fled with almost nothing to Germany before World War II, then migrated to Australia after the war.
Having contracted tuberculosis whilst working in Tasmania, an outdoor job was recommended when the family moved to SA.
Vilja thus started as an Adelaide Botanic Gardens trainee in about 1957, then served as a Botanical Assistant in the SA Herbarium from July 1961 until her retirement in September 1994.
After retiring, she undertook voluntary mounting work in the SA Herbarium every Tuesday until 2009, when ill-health forced her to stop.
In later years she built up a good connection with the University of Tartu in Estonia.
She spoke numerous languages and was invaluable for translation purposes in the SA herbarium.
