Born on 16 June 1878.
He joined the Forestry Commission of New South Wales as a Forest Guard in 1912 and was stationed at Coopernook (near Taree) until 1914. At the end of the latter year he was appointed to Dorrigo and remained with the forest service until the end of 1922.
