Kirton, William (1822–1894)
Baptised on 10 March 1822 in Denton, Lincolnshire, England (parents Samuel and Susan); emigrated to Australia, arriving on 25 May 1849 on the Agenoria (one of four gardeners, apparently as part of an assisted migration scheme); died in North Bulli, New South Wales, on 21 August 1894.
A pioneer gardener in the Illawarra district; trialled growing sugar cane at Bulli in the 1870s. Specimens collected by Kirton are held in the Melbourne and Sydney National Herbaria.
Honoured in the names Eucalyptus kirtoniana F. Muell. (1879) (now thought to be a hybrid) and Elaeocarpus kirtonii F.Muell. ex F.M.Bailey (1886). Kirton collected material of these plants from the Illawarra and supplied it to Mueller.
