His parentage was German Swiss and Slavic German descent on patemal side - Scottish/Cornish on mother's side. He married Cynthia in 1961 and they had four children: Peter, Raelene, Darrell Jnr. and Heather.
He attended Adelaide Boys High School, and later Adelaide University.
Conservation Activities:
He was a well-known Conservationist and plant enthusiast for a period of over 50 years,
former tutor in Botany, WEA and Adult Education Spring Schools. Before retirement employed as Scientific Officer, Department of Environment
and Natural Resources, Kensington, South Australia.
He was an prolific plant collector for the State Herbarium, Adelaide, since 1957.
Clubs and Societies:
Foundation member of both the Nature Conservation Society of South Australia
and the Society for Growing Australian Plants (SA); President, Field Naturalists'
Society of South Australia Inc. and Secretary for 10 years; member of the
Panel for Significant Trees (National Trust SA) and the Australian Heritage
Commission.
Publications:
Over 140, chiefly of botanical or historical botanical content.
Hobbies & Interests:
Photography, book collecting, ornithology, Australian Rules football, cricket
and tennis (still playing 1996).
