Thomas Lea was educated at Oxford and priested in London, England, in 1882. After serving as a curate at St Peters, South Kensington, London (1881-85), he became assistant chaplain to the Bishop of Adelaide, S.A. (1885-86). He then served on a British Museum Expedition to Fernando de Noronha in 1887, after which he resumed a church career in England, holding various positions from 1887 to 1923.
