Born in Graz (Styria/Austria) on 10 February 1858, died in Prague (Bohemia), on 3 July 1913
Arrived in Melbourne in 1881, studied the sponges and medusas at the coasts of South Australia, 1882-1883 cartographic studies in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, 1885 and 1886 journeys to the Australian Alps searching for glacial tracks, 1886 back to Europe, assistant at the University College of London, 1889 return to Austria, professor on the universities of Innsbruck (Tirol), Czernovtsy (Bukovina/Ukraine) and Prague.
