Born in Adelaide, S.A. on 22 June 1863.
He was educated in Cornwall, England, but returned to Australia and joined the Victorian Department of Mines as an assistant geological surveyor in 1891. In 1897 he was promoted to Assistant Government Geologist and the next year was appointed Government Mining Representative in London, but resigned later in the same year to go into private practice. In 1901 he was President of the Australian Institution of Mining Engineers; he was an associate of the Royal Society of Victoria and a member of several mining and geological societies. He was a member of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, in 1906 and his address was then Kalgoorlie, WA., whilst from 1907 to 1909 it was Mt Morgan (presumably the location near Widgiemooltha), W.A. His name did not appear in subsequent lists of membership.
He was collector of the type of Eucalyptus stricklandii Maiden (1911)
