Lindsay was born at Creswick, Victoria, in 1874. He died in Melbourne in 1961.
As a young man he was a pupil-assistant at Melbourne Observatory and studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, teaching himself etching and engraving while a student.
Lindsay worked as a journalist, art critic and artist, contributing to The Bulletin and other newspapers and magazines, as well as holding exhibitions in Australia and London.
Lindsay became a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales and was knighted for his services to Australian art in 1941. In his later years he was an outspoken critic of modernism, expressing his views in his publication, Addled Art. He was the brother of the artist Norman Lindsay.
