Ken MacPherson was a North Queensland orchid enthusiast who lived at Sinclair Bay near Mt Dryander and not far from Proserpine. He made his name breeding many well known hybrids using Dendrobium discolor and D. canaliculatum as parents.
He corresponded with several botanists including Dr Hugo Flecker, Rev. H.M.R. Rupp, Dr R.S. Rogers and CT White. Two specimens which he sent to Rupp were described as new species: Bulbophyllum macphersonii and Cleisostoma orbiculare (now a synonym of Saccolabiopsis armitii)
