Born in New Zealand on 7 May 1940.
After graduating from the University of New Zealand she accompanied her husband to the Australian Forestry School, Canberra, Australia, when he was completing qualifications in forestry (1961-62). During that time she held the position of Botany Taxonomist, Forestry and Timber Bureau, and worked with R. D. Johnston. She was joint author with him of Taxonomy and Nomenclature of Eucalypts (1965). After 1969 she worked as a secondary school teacher in New Zealand.
