Julie did her undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, and was an intern/trainee with the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra in 1996.
She did an Honours degree at ANU and CPBR in Canberra in 1998 on a scholarships from the Weeds CRC with the project, supervised by Tony Willis and John Vranjic, comparing the effects of weed competition and herbicide application for weed control on the growth and population biology of Pimelea spicata, an endangered shrub threatened by environmental weeds.
In the early 2000's she managed the Australian National Herbarium's database entry at a time when the Herbarium was involved with the AVH funding of a team of databasers.
She prepared the User Documentation for the Herbarium's ANHSIR database.
Julie became the de facto cook for the Herbarium's internship program field trips.
She then moved to Wollongong University where she worked for the Research Grants and Development Team - Research and Innovation Division.
She later became Manager for the Wollongong University 'About Steel Research Hub 1' concerned with metal production research.
