Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born at Barraba, N.S.W., on 1 July 1882 and died at Armidale, N.S.W., on 19 May 1948.
At first he intended to follow a business career and entered a bank, but resigned to enter St Andrew’s College, University of Sydney, where he graduated in 1906. He completed his theological studies in 1908; his first posting was to Manila, whence he moved to Bendemeer in 1909 and to Guyra in 1912; he was Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in 1938.
McKie was
an amateur botanist of distinction and had detailed knowledge of the
eucalypts and grasses of the New England District, where he spent most
of his life. He maintained close contact with W. F. Blakely
and both collected and collaborated in the botanical descriptions of
many eucalypts of the area; among people interested in the genus his
name will always be associated with the stringybark group.
Besides his interest in botany he took an active interest in
improvements to the standard of agriculture in his district, and was
the first secretary of the local branch of the New South Wales
Agricultural Bureau.
He was a member of the Australian
Institute of Agricultural Science, the Royal Society of New South Wales
and the Linnean Society of New South Wales; papers by him were
contributed to the journal of the latter society.
