Stephen is a forester and a specialist in forest genetic
resources and development. He is an Asia-specialist, and has worked in Asia for over 40 years through long-term projects in Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka and China and via many short-term projects.
Stephen had a long career with CSIRO where he was leader of a major team specialising in the international domestication and utilisation of Australia's trees, mainly eucalypts and acacias, and headed the Australian Tree Seed center.
He has a BSc (For) and M. For from ANU and has published widely; his work has been recognised by the Governments of China, Vietnam, the Chinese Forestry Society, the Commonwealth Forestry Association, the Institute of Foresters of Australia and CSIRO.
Stephen is a Member of the inaugural Board of the Asia Pacific Forestry Network (APFNet). Clients include major pulp and paper multinationals, sector-investors, consultancy companies, national agencies, development agencies and major research institutions.
In later life he ran his own consulting business, Salwood Asia Pacific Pty Ltd.
