Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born in Queanbyan, NSW, 6 Feb. 1925, died Queanbyan, 10 Sept. 2013
Of Greek background, Effie had a love of the Australian bush throughout her life. She undertook a TAFE Horticulture Certificate as a mature age student and joined the staff of the Canberra Botanic Gardens in 1972. She worked in a range of roles at the Gardens but she will be remembered most for her teaching of horticulture to primary school students in the 1970s and 1980s [photo]; and for the text she wrote for several editions of the Gardens' Growing Native Plants booklets. She also wrote a column on behalf of the Gardens for the Canberra Times newspaper for a short time.
Her plant collections lodged with the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra (then the ANBG Herbarium, CBG) number about 750 from a wide range of locations.
