He was born in Sydney, 5 th December, 1824, and died there 18 th July, 1906.
He wrote but little, yet took the liveliest interest in the flora of New South Wales, cultivating many species, conserving others and was an ardent horticulturist. He was Chairman of the Trustees of the Public Library, Member of the Legislative Council, one of the founders of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, and for many years its honoraary treasurer.
A sympathetic account of his work will be found in Proc. Linn. Soc., N.S.W., xxzii, 6 (1907) by the then President of the Society, Mr Thomas Steel.

He is commemorated in Adenochilus nortoni, Fitz., a rare Mountain Orchid.
