Born in in Worchester, USA, on 2 June, 1916; died in Northampton, USA, 15 March, 2008.
Botanist and plant anatomist of many talents, editor, writer of handbooks, and adviser of students. Her Ericaceae collections reflect her national and international travels, with specimens ranging from the United States to New Zealand, India, and Australia.
She also taught and did research at Duke University, University of Canterbury in New Zealand and University of Melbourne in Australia and spent many years after her retirement continuing her research at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, USA.
