Born at Bunbury, WA., on 10 August 1933.
His academic qualifications are from the Universities of Western Australia and Melbourne, and the Australian Forestry School. He joined the Forest Research Institute, Forestry and Timber Bureau, as a research officer in 1959 and was Officer-in-Charge of the Research Station at Dwellingup, later moved to Kelmscott, WA., from then until 1967. This was followed by post-graduate research in New Zealand; he had specialized in forest pathology. He received the I.U.F.R.O. Scientific Achievement Award in 1971.
