Poiteau worked as a botanist in the French West Indies for the French government from 1796. After returning to France in 1801, he worked with Plee and Redoute, illustrating for Jacques-Julien Houtou de Labillardiere, including Novae Hollandieae Plantarum Specimen (1804-1806).
